Only if your original one ticket journey already included a change of trains will you need to change trains. However, should our proprietary journey planner find alternative travel options that cost a lot less, and require an additional change of trains en route during your selected time of travel, we will offer you the alternative in addition to the more expensive direct option.
UK train ticket pricing is fluid and ticket cost is determined by many factors including the time you travel, the availability of discounted tickets, multiple train companies operating different parts of your route, etc. When you perform a fare search on the splitsaver journey planner our system looks for all available combinations of tickets that could greatly reduce the price of your journey.
For example: If your journey commences during the most expensive peak time travel period but ends during the less expensive off-peak period you are charged the more expensive peak time ticket price for your entire journey when purchasing a single ticket. So what we try do is split your ticket into two parts - one for peak time period and another for the off-peak period - thereby reducing the cost of your journey. You will still travel on the same train, at the same time and most likely in the same seat - the only difference is the same journey will likely cost a lot less.
Per the National Conditions of Carriage should one of the trains you travel on be delayed and result in you missing your ticketed connection on the following train you may use your split ticket on the next available train, even if that train falls into a different price zone and your ticket is for a specific train only. Unless you have a flexible ticket this concession only applies if your train is delayed and not if you are late and subsequently miss your scheduled departure. Please note that seat reservations on missed departures do not apply on subsequent trains you may need to travel on.
